Carbondale is an exciting community located just a few miles from the Shawnee National Forest. It is the home of Southern Illinois University and, as a result, boasts plenty of cultural activities and exciting university sports. The community has a fantastic shopping mall and retail establishments, well-groomed historic neighborhoods, and beautiful parks and gardens. Carbondale’s nostalgic downtown focuses on the community’s railroad heritage, and features a restored passenger depot, train cars, a downtown park and a unique historic pavilion. While the community has a strong link to history, its heritage is best known through Woodlawn Cemetery, the probable location of the nation’s first Memorial Day observance.
